When we walked in we realized there would be a magician. This unnerved me because the kids have an uncanny ability to be picked out of a sea of children as a volunteer in that kind of circumstance. Happens almost every time. So we sat through 30 minutes of magic, and each time a volunteer was needed my kids and their sweet little friend would sit up straight as an arrow with an "I'm the one you want" smile on their face.
Finally the magician announced he had one last (thank God) trick left, and needed a volunteer. But not just any volunteer. Oh, no. He needed the BEST volunteer ever! The audience member who had been sitting the quietest, looking the cutest, and participating with the most enthusiasm.
I started to panic. The magician -and honestly I feel about magicians the way I feel about clowns and crows- built up this last volunteer introduction so that every child was holding her breath in heart palpitating anticipation. You would have thought he was handing out a part in the sequel to Frozen.
"Don't do it. Please don't do it." I was pleading to the parenting gods above.
The magician pointed to Corinne who sprinted up to the stage ecstatically. Taylor turned to me and I knew the night had been ruined, even though this very thing has happened before where Taylor had been the ridiculously happy magician's assistant. Didn't matter. To have your sister picked over you was the beginning of World War III.
The sibling rivalry in our house was beefed up ten-fold by a man in a cape with a questionable career choice.
