Negative Nancy

A few years ago, my mom treated us to a week in Hawaii with the whole family. We were beyond excited. Sadly, on our second day there and for the rest of the trip, Hawaii was hit with a storm that caused mud slides and road flooding that they hadn't seen in years. Despite the rain, we were in paradise and wanted to enjoy it. Anytime someone would complain, my step-brothers would yell, "Negative Nancy! Negative Nancy!"

Well I've been a Negative Nancy this whole week. Just walking around in a funk with a bad attitude. The car started over heating. The a/c in our house broke during a 3 day heat wave and our landlords are out of town. There was an excess of whining from the girls on a field trip to a farm, where I threatened to throw Taylor over the side of the tractor....All in all, just one of those weeks where nothing seemed to go right.

Yesterday, Corinne fell asleep after swim class at 10 am, so I immediately knew she was sick. Last night, it hit, and she was feverish into the morning. Our thermometer said she was at 102 degrees, but I took her into Urgent Care because I figured it was just an ear infection. When they checked her in, she had a fever of 104.1 and was completely lethargic and delusional, asking me random questions about swim lessons. I panicked and could feel the tears welling up in my eyes.

The doctor was concerned that he couldn't find anything obviously wrong with her. He rattled off possibilities that mommies don't want to hear, and thought he might even send us to the ER. He opted for blood work and an x-ray. Corinne was a champ, but poor baby has inherited her Great Grammy's tiny veins, and the nurse had a heck of a time finding them. She poked her repeatedly while I snarled at her under my breath to speed things along. Long story short, or maybe it's already too long, Rinny has pneumonia and had two shots of antibiotics in the bum. She conked out after three hours at urgent care, and woke up feeling much better. We are currently watching "Peppa Pig" at 10:00 pm, snuggling in my bed and thankful that a dose of antibiotics in one's arse can make such a huge difference.

When we were waiting for a nurse, Corinne asked me about the wrist band they gave me when we checked in with her name on it. I told her it was a bracelet that let everyone know that she belonged to me. She said, "I'm yours, and Daddy's, and Taylor's, and Zero's." Between that and my silent prayers for everything to come back normal from the blood work, I was kicking myself for being such a Negative Nancy all week. My life is pretty much a paradise, and boy do I take it for granted sometimes. I hate that it takes experiences like this sometimes to break up my pity party and knock some sense into me.

Zero tried to play with Corinne while she was sleeping. He gave her his toy that she likes to throw. It was pretty sad. Dumb dog has grown on me.

On our field trip to Underwood Farms. We really did enjoy picking strawberries. They were declicious!
